Our results demonstrate that overexpression of EGFR, an epigenetic observation of uncertain significance in human oligodendroglioma, can initiate oligodendroglioma in the mouse.

We analyzed 154 primary glioma tumors (37 astrocytoma II and III, 52 primary glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), 11 secondary GBM, 54 oligodendroglioma/oligoastrocytoma II and III) and 13 nonmalignant brain tissues for aberrant methylation with quantitative methylation-specific PCR (qMS-PCR) and for EZH2 and IGFBP2 expression with quantitative reverse transcription PCR (qRT-PCR).

Remarkably, most of the genes showing distinctive expression in oligodendroglioma with 1p loss were also highly expressed in normal brain tissues and had neuron-related function, which included MYT1L, INA, RIMS2, SNAP97 and SNCB.
We report that the BCAN, CSPG4, IGF2BP3, PTPRZ1 and TNC proteins are significantly over-expressed at the mRNA (n = 159) and protein (n = 36) levels in grade II/III glioma patients as compared to non-tumor samples (IGF2BP3 being absent from oligodendroglioma).
